 Virginia Museum of Natural History scientists have confirmed that an approximately 500 million-year-old stromatolite was recently discovered at the Boxley Blue Ridge Quarry near Roanoke, Virginia.  This specimen is the first-ever intact stromatolite head found in Virginia, and is one of the largest complete "heads" in the world, at over 5 feet in diameter and weighing over 2 tons. Stromatolites are among the earliest known life forms, and are important in helping scientists understand more about environments that existed in the past.

As we are nearing the end of the calander year, I have started to compose my list of possible submissions for our federation competitions. I do not have near the number of articles that I have had to choose from in past years.
The competition and awards are an excellent way for our members and our club to receive regional, and perhaps even national recognition.
The good news  is that there are still 4 monthly editions for which you could submit an article, drawing, game, poem, whatever you like- to be considered as a contender for the competition.
We have taken home trophies(2 trophies won by junior members) and many certificates over the past years, and I was very proud to represent our club at the annual federation conventions.
Please consider a submission in the next couple of months. It helps to make our newsletter stronger and more well rounded for everyone to enjoy. And I will be so happy to be bringing home
YOUR award in 2009!
If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.
Thanks,
Natalie Darling, Editor
Gem and Mineral Journal;
Eastern Federation Bulletin Editors Advisory Chairperson.
